MBUX Surround Navigation: Seamless Integration of Function and Route Guidance

Integrated visual communication reaches a new level with MBUX Surround Navigation. Thanks to the deeply integrated design of MB.OS, this advanced navigation system provides a real-time view of the vehicle and its surroundings. It merges the driver-assistance view with a 3D representation of the environment and route guidance on the driver display, showing surrounding vehicles, cyclists, motorbikes, and pedestrians.

By combining this information with 3D game-engine graphics, the system delivers an exceptionally intuitive overview. Drivers benefit from enhanced situational awareness as they can “see what the CLA sees,” understanding how assistance systems are supporting them. This fosters greater confidence on the road, marking an important step toward autonomous driving.

The environmental visualization of route guidance is particularly useful in dense urban traffic, allowing drivers to anticipate what lies ahead — even beyond the next corner. Buildings and road infrastructure are clearly and quickly recognizable. The system also provides real-time visualizations of vehicle status, including lighting, acceleration, and deceleration, through wheel-speed animation.

Intelligent Navigation You Can Trust – Tailor-Made Route Guidance from Google Maps

In the new CLA, navigation is powered by Google Maps, offering Mercedes-Benz customers the best of both worlds: the familiar Mercedes-Benz interface combined with Google’s class-leading mapping and AI expertise. The navigation system, jointly developed by Google and Mercedes-Benz, is one of the first to integrate Google Cloud’s Automotive AI Agent for in-vehicle use with Google Maps.

Mercedes-Benz Navigation with Electric Intelligence plans the fastest and most convenient route — including charging stops — while dynamically adapting to traffic and driving style. Energy demand is calculated based on multiple variables such as topography, route profile, temperature, speed, and climate control usage. Traffic conditions and available charging stations — including capacity and payment functionality — are also considered.

Computation takes place in the cloud and integrates seamlessly with on-board data. The system intelligently determines when a charging stop is necessary and optimizes the total journey time. In some cases, two shorter high-capacity charging stops may be faster than one longer session. Charging settings are automatically pre-configured for optimal DC charging efficiency, including preconditioning of the high-voltage battery to ensure it reaches the ideal temperature in time.

Mercedes-Benz is also the first carmaker to introduce an integrated charging-station reservation feature. Initially available in Germany and the USA, the MB.CHARGE Public service allows customers to reserve a charging spot in advance at Mercedes-Benz Charging Hubs. When route guidance is active, the system automatically reserves a spot 15 minutes before arrival — reducing waiting times and providing peace of mind for drivers.

KEYLESS-GO with Automatic Locking and Unlocking

The new CLA is available with the optional KEYLESS-GO feature. In its latest version, the vehicle automatically locks or unlocks as the person carrying the key approaches or walks away (depending on market availability). Drivers can choose between four regeneration levels — D+, D, D-, and D Auto — using steering-wheel paddles, while the ECO Assistant automatically adjusts recuperation based on upcoming road events, such as intersections, curves, or speed limits.

Advanced Battery Technology and Bidirectional Charging

The high-density 85 kWh lithium-ion battery uses graphite-silicon-oxide anodes for a 20 % increase in energy density (680 Wh/l). A smaller 58 kWh LFP version will follow. Mercedes-Benz guarantees at least 70 % capacity for eight years or 160,000 km.

The CLA is also prepared for bidirectional charging, enabling Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) applications — allowing stored energy to be fed back into the grid or home systems. This functionality will be activated via a future OTA update, depending on local regulations.

Class-Leading Aerodynamics

Aerodynamic efficiency directly enhances range — every 0.01 reduction in drag coefficient extends range by around 2.5 %. With a drag coefficient from 0.21, the CLA leads its class.

Refined details include optimized wheel spoilers, smooth underbody panels, fixed rear-wheel covers, and aerodynamically refined diffusers. The new two-tone full-cover alloy wheels improve aerodynamic efficiency by up to two points compared to standard designs.

The result is a perfect harmony of performance, design, and sustainability — a car that looks dynamic while cutting effortlessly through the air.

Comfort Suspension with Multi-Link Rear Axle Derived from the Mid and Upper-Class Segments

The new CLA features a standard steel-sprung comfort suspension that combines advanced engineering with refined ride quality. At the front, a newly developed three-link axle provides precise handling and a composed driving experience. The lower control arm integrates both the transverse and thrust arms, forged from aluminium to reduce weight and enhance rigidity. As with a traditional McPherson setup, the strut guides the wheel and connects directly to the steering knuckle.

The third link, the tie rod, forms part of the rack-and-pinion steering system. Positioned ahead of the wheel centre, the transverse steering gear ensures optimal self-steering characteristics and sharp, predictable responses. The steering knuckle itself — linking the lower control arm to the strut while supporting the wheel and braking assembly — is crafted from cast aluminium. This construction prioritises low weight and high camber stiffness, ensuring outstanding steering precision and minimal noise.

At the rear, a newly designed multi-link axle delivers the comfort and stability usually reserved for Mercedes-Benz vehicles from higher segments. By introducing this premium suspension concept into the CLA, Mercedes-Benz sets a new benchmark for ride refinement and dynamic control in its class.

Exceptional Active and Passive Safety – First Centre Airbag in Its Vehicle Class

The all-new CLA has been designed from the ground up to incorporate the latest innovations in active and passive safety. In doing so, Mercedes-Benz continues its leadership in safety technology, striving to make the CLA the safest vehicle in its segment.

An array of advanced driver assistance systems helps prevent accidents before they occur. Should a collision prove unavoidable, the vehicle’s carefully engineered crumple zones, rigid passenger cell, and sophisticated restraint systems work together to minimise injury risk.

For the first time in this class, Mercedes-Benz introduces a centre airbag as standard. Installed within the driver’s seat backrest, it deploys between the driver and front passenger during a severe side impact—depending on the severity and occupancy—to reduce the risk of contact injuries.

Proven Multi-Stage High-Voltage Protection and Advanced Battery Early Warning System

Protecting both occupants and the high-voltage system is a central priority in every Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle. In addition to safeguarding passengers and other road users, the company applies strict standards beyond legal requirements to the high-voltage battery, cabling, and related components.

In the new CLA, the battery housing forms an integral part of the crash structure. For this latest generation of high-voltage batteries, Mercedes-Benz has implemented comprehensive measures against potential thermal incidents, such as optimised spacing between battery cells and revised cell module structures.

A newly enhanced early warning system monitors the battery’s condition even when the vehicle is parked. If irregularities are detected, the system triggers safety measures that may include automatically closing the side windows and ventilation flaps. A central sensor located within the battery continuously monitors its status to ensure maximum protection.

The CLA continues to employ Mercedes-Benz’s proven eight-stage high-voltage protection concept. This ensures there is no electrical hazard to passengers or first responders following a collision — a system thoroughly validated through extensive in-house accident research.

In the event of an impact, the high-voltage system automatically deactivates itself, distinguishing between reversible and irreversible shutdown.

  • Reversible shutdown occurs in minor accidents; if the driver attempts to restart the car, an automatic insulation check is performed, allowing operation only when the system is fault-free.
  • Irreversible shutdown follows severe impacts where the car is no longer drivable; reactivation is possible only by an authorised specialist workshop.

During shutdown, controlled discharge ensures components are safe to handle. Additionally, designated cut-off points enable rescue personnel to manually de-energise the high-voltage system if necessary.

All-Electric CLA Reduces Carbon Footprint by 40 Percent Compared to Its Predecessor

As the first model in an all-new electric vehicle family, the CLA represents a major step forward in sustainability. Across its full value chain, the new all-electric CLA reduces its carbon footprint by 40 percent compared with its predecessor. With further carbon-reduction initiatives in the supply chain and during battery charging, this figure could reach up to two-thirds.

Approximately 40 percent of the aluminium used is produced in facilities powered by renewable energy, saving around 400 kilograms of CO₂ per vehicle. Meanwhile, improvements in the production of high-voltage cells reduce their carbon footprint by around 30 percent per cell.

In addition to net carbon-neutral cell manufacturing, renewable energy powers the production of cathodes, anodes, and cell housings. Many interior and thermoplastic components contain significant proportions of secondary materials—four times more than before.

Half of the thermoplastic content now comes from post-consumer recyclates. For example, the jack mounts are made entirely from recycled car bumpers, while the front luggage compartment well (“frunk”) contains roughly 70 percent recycled content.

MB.CHARGE Public: Integrated Digital Charging Experience

Mercedes-Benz consolidates all public charging functions under MB.CHARGE Public (formerly Mercedes me Charge), offering a seamless, user-friendly experience. With a single contract, customers gain access to one of the world’s largest public charging networks, with transparent pricing and universal compatibility regardless of operator.

Authentication is easy via the Mercedes-Benz app, MB.CHARGE Public RFID card, or directly through Plug & Charge functionality at participating stations. All charging sessions are automatically billed, and costs per kilowatt-hour or per minute—along with estimated totals—are displayed on the MBUX interface or app prior to charging.

Customers can also select from a range of regional tariffs with discounted rates. Mercedes-Benz continues to expand global charging infrastructure through its own initiatives and partnerships, including IONITY, IONNA, and IONCHI. By 2030, these efforts will provide around 45,000 charging points worldwide, all accessible through MB.CHARGE Public.

Green Charging: Commitment to Renewable Energy

Green Charging is a key component of MB.CHARGE Public in Europe, Canada, and the United States. Where direct renewable electricity is not available, Mercedes-Benz uses certified green energy certificates to ensure that an equivalent amount of electricity from renewable sources is fed into the grid.

Certificates are sourced from certified plants less than six years old and, whenever possible, are purchased and cancelled within the same country where charging occurs. This helps expand renewable energy capacity over time.

Mercedes-Benz is also extending Green Charging to private households, enabling customers to maximise the use of renewable energy when charging at home through intelligent wallbox systems.

High-Tech Hybrid Models with 48-Volt Technology

Electric Assistance for Everyday Efficiency

While all-electric models are central to the brand’s sustainable strategy, Mercedes-Benz continues to meet the diverse mobility needs of customers worldwide. Hence, the new CLA will also be offered as a hybrid with 48-volt technology and an electric motor integrated into the transmission.

The modular design of the CLA’s architecture allows maximum flexibility for multiple powertrains within the same production line. Visually, the hybrid shares much of its design with the all-electric variant, distinguished primarily by a chrome grille featuring the Mercedes-Benz star pattern and a subtle LED light frame.

Developed in Germany to the brand’s highest standards, the hybrid powertrain combines a new four-cylinder petrol engine from the FAME family with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission featuring an integrated electric motor. Three power levels and both front-wheel-drive and 4MATIC configurations will be available.

Compact, Intelligent Hybrid System with Electric Drive Capabilities

The electric motor, inverter, and transmission form a highly integrated and compact assembly. A new 48-volt lithium-ion battery, with a flatpack design and 1.3 kWh capacity, powers the system.

The electric motor provides smooth torque assistance across all speed ranges, significantly improving low-end acceleration and enabling all-electric driving at urban speeds below 20 kW demand. The hybrid can also “sail” — coast efficiently with the drivetrain decoupled — up to 100 km/h.

Recuperation occurs in all eight gears, recovering up to 25 kW of energy. With torque from both power sources combining seamlessly, the hybrid delivers strong performance while maintaining remarkable efficiency.

The integrated electric motor eliminates the need for a conventional starter, ensuring near-silent operation and imperceptible transitions between power sources. The eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (8F-eDCT) uses electrohydraulic control for both clutches and incorporates an electric motor for smooth, efficient operation.

New Four-Cylinder Engine with Miller-Cycle Efficiency

The M 252 engine, a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol unit from the Family of Modular Engines (FAME), represents the latest evolution of Mercedes-Benz combustion technology.

With an all-aluminium crankcase featuring NANOSLIDE® coating and a cylinder head with an integrated exhaust manifold, it’s designed for efficiency and durability. A segmented turbocharger and close-coupled exhaust system optimise emissions performance and prepare the engine for future standards.

Operating on the Miller cycle—with early intake valve closure and a high 12:1 compression ratio—the engine achieves exceptional thermal efficiency, particularly under partial load, reducing both fuel consumption and NOx emissions.

Advanced NVH measures, a double-bulkhead design, and sound insulation around the A-pillars and floor ensure outstanding refinement. Together with the compact engine-transmission layout, the system enhances packaging efficiency and driving comfort.

Production at the Rastatt Plant: Smart, Sustainable, and Digital

Hybrid versions of the CLA are produced alongside their all-electric counterparts on the same flexible line at the Mercedes-Benz Rastatt plant. Production is net carbon-neutral, powered entirely by renewable electricity.

As the lead plant for compact Mercedes-Benz models, Rastatt exemplifies the brand’s “Digital First” production philosophy. Using digital twin technology, engineers virtually modelled and commissioned the extensive conversion of an existing assembly hall.

The CLA also debuts the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), the company’s proprietary chip-to-cloud architecture that centralises vehicle software and enhances update capabilities.
